BoinxTV

Menu Item Shortcut Description
About BoinxTV Shows a screen with information about the installed version of BoinxTV and lists all the credits
Software Update… Usually the Software Update procedure runs automatically in the background but this menu item lets you start the procedure manually. The Software Updater window will show up and guide you through the process.
Provide Feedback… If you have any type of feedback (Issue Report, Feature Request, General Comment, Support Follow-Up) you can use the built in Feedback Assistant to send it to us.
Buy Now… If you don't own a copy of BoinxTV yet, you can open the Purchase Assistant which will guide you through the buying process.
Register… If you bought a retail version of BoinxTV you can register your licenses with Boinx.
Preferences… ⌘, Opens the Preferences window. Here you can customize the behavior of BoinxTV to your needs. (hold down the option key ⌥ to get into the Preference for Debug Mode)
Licenses… Λ⌘L When selecting this menu item the License Assistant will show up. Here you are able to install, check and deinstall your licenses for BoinxTV
Services… System-wide Services
Hide BoinxTV ⌘H Hide away all BoinxTV windows from your screen. The app is still running!
Hide Others ⌥⌘H Hide away all windows of other applications from your screen keeping only those from BoinxTV. The hidden apps are still running!
Show all Make all application windows reappear again
Quit BoinxTV ⌘Q Closes all open documents and quits the application, asking to save changes if necessary.

File

Menu Item Shortcut Description
New with Template… ⌘N Brings up the Template Chooser window. You can choose from a variety of included BoinxTV document templates or your own templates if you already created ones.
Open… ⌘O To open an existing BoinxTV Document
Open Recent Quickly resume work from a list of recently opened documents.
Close ⌘W The front-most document window will be closed. If changes were made, BoinxTV asks you if those should be saved.
Save ⌘S The front-most document will get saved. If the menu item is disabled then the front-most document has no changes.
Save As… ⇧⌘S The front-most document can be saved under a new file name. This new file will be used for further editing.
Save As Template… If you save a document as a template it will show up in the Template Chooser. See Working With Templates for more info.
Revert If you have made changes to your document you can revert the document to the last saved version.
Export Recording… ⌘E If you record your show to disc it is probably not in the destination format you need. With this option you can export your last recording to a certain file format or upload to YouTube.
Import Layer Compositions… If you created your own layers with Quartz Composer you can import them here. Read How to import a layer with the Composition Importer for further instructions.
Document Information ⌘; Opens the Document Settings for the front-most document where you can set descriptive information about the document. This information is embedded as metadata in the recorded file. If an image is set it will be used as the thumbnail for the file.

Edit

Menu Item Shortcut Description
Undo ⌘Z Lets you undo the last action.
Redo ⇧⌘Z Reverses the last undo action.
Cut ⌘X Cuts the selection to the pasteboard. Currently works only with text.
Copy ⌘C Copies the selection to the pasteboard. Currently works only with text.
Paste ⌘V Inserts the content from the pasteboard. Currently works only with text.
Paste and Match Style ⌥⇧⌘V Inserts the plain text content from the pasteboard.
Delete Deletes the selection. The selection could be text or a layer.
Select All ⌘A Sets the selection to the complete text.
Find Not supported by BoinxTV.
Spelling Check your spelling of any text in BoinxTV.
Special Characters… ⌥⌘T Opens up the system character viewer.

Layer

Menu Item Shortcut Description
Switch Live/Off ⌘L Switches the selected layer on or off. Keyboard shortcuts can be assigned to each layer to trigger Live states quickly and easily.
Rename Lets you change the name of the selected layer. An edit box will appear around the title of the layer in the layer stack. Confirm with Return.
Duplicate ⌘D Duplicates the selected layer at the same place in the layer stack. All the settings gets duplicated too.
Delete ⌘⌫ Removes the selected layer from the layer stack.
Expand/Collapse ⌘⏎ Switches the display mode of layer settings within the layer stack from horizontal to vertical or vice versa.
Layer Setting Expands to Layer Setting Sub Menu
Select Above ⌘↑ Selects the layer above the currently selected one. This helps you to scroll through your layer stack.
Select Below ⌘↓ Selects the layer below the currently selected one. This helps you to scroll through your layer stack.
Toggle Layers Library ⌘1 Shows or hides the Layer Library at the bottom of the Document Window.
Custom Layer… Opens a webpage promoting layer customization.

Layer Setting Sub Menu

Menu Item Shortcut Description
Rename Lets you change the name of the current selected layer setting. An edit box will appear around the title of the layer setting in the layer stack. Confirm with Return.
Duplicate ⌘+ Duplicates the current selected layer setting and adds it to the layer. Use LayerExpand (⌘⏎) to change between horizontal and vertical display of the layer settings.
Delete ⌥⌘⌫ Removes the selected layer setting from the layer.
Select Previous ⌘← Selects the previous layer setting of the currently selected layer. This helps you to scroll through your layer settings of one layer.
Select Next ⌘→ Selects the next layer setting of the currently selected layer. This helps you to scroll through your layer settings of one layer.

Source

Menu Item Shortcut Description
Add Media File… ⇧⌘A If you want to use any kind of media file (image/video/audio) you can add it to your BoinxTV document with this menu item.
Show iMedia Browser ⇧⌘M The iMedia Browser shows a collection of all your media libraries from applications like iPhoto, Aperture, Lightroom or iTunes. You can brows your media and add them to your BoinxTV document easily.
Add Camera Source If you connected a new camera to your computer and it isn't visible in the Source Library you can add it here.
Add Screen Source If you need to record a portion of your computer desktop you can add it to your Source Library here.
Add Audio Source Creates a new audio source in your Source Library.
Toggle Source Library ⌘2 Shows or hides the Source Library.

Show

Note: “Show” in terms of “TV Show.” These can also be accessed from the slate icon to the left of the status display on the top of the Document Window

Menu Item Shortcut Description
Select All Live Settings If you are working with multiple settings per layer (e.g. you entered lots of names in Lower Thirds) then you can switch back all the selected layer settings to the ones which are currently live.
Start Recording ⌘R Start recording your show. Please read Recording A Show for further information.
Record to Disk Indicates if the show will be recorded to a file or just output on screen.
Play Full Screen Indicates if your show will be outputted to the selected fullscreen destination.
Frame Rate You can specify at which frame rate the show should be rendered and recorded. Available options are: 10, 12, 15, 24, 25, 30, 50, 60. Please read Recording A Show to learn which framerate to choose.
Recording Format When recording to disc you can specify the video codec to be used. Available options are: Apple Intermediate Codec (default), Apple ProRes 422, Apple ProRes 422 HQ, MPEG-4 Video, Uncompressed 8-bit 4:2:2, RAW (None). Please refer to Recording A Show to learn which codec is appropriate.
Adjust Document Size… You can change the dimensions of your show from a variety of presets or set a custom width and height in pixels.
Timer… Opens the Show Timer Panel. Please read Show Timers to learn how to make use of it.

View

Menu Item Shortcut Description
Start/Stop Fullscreen ⌘B Switches fullscreen output on and off. You may be asked to select the display for fullscreen output if you have connected a secondary monitor to your machine. You can setup this selection in the Preferences
Pause Rendering If you want to save CPU cycles when working in another application you can switch off the video rendering. This option is disabled during a recording session.
Show/Hide Selected Layer in Window You can open or close a floating window showing the preview of the selected Layer Setting to be placed anywhere on your desktop.
Float Preview On Top If checked, the layer preview window is never covered by any other window on your desktop.
Hide Preview Title Bar If checked, the title bar on top of the layer preview window will be removed.
Show/Hide Live Output in Window You can open or close a floating window showing the live output. You can place this window anywhere on your desktop.
Float Output On Top If checked, the output window is never covered by any other window on your desktop.
Show/Hide Output Title Bar If checked, the title bar on top of the layer preview window will be removed.
Action-Safe Overlay If checked, an action-safe area frame will be overlaid in the layer preview and the output preview (screen reduced by 10%). This frame isn't recorded to the movie file in a recording session.
Title-Safe Overlay If checked, a title-safe area frame will be overlaid in the layer preview and the output preview (screen reduced by 20%). This frame isn't recorded to the movie file in a recording session.

Window

Menu Item Shortcut Description
Minimize ⌘M Collapses the front-most window to the MacOS-X dock. Restore the window by clicking on the window in the dock or selecting the window name in list at the bottom of the Window menu.
Zoom Zooms the front-most window to the maximum size on the current display. In the case of the Layers Preview Window and the Live Output Window: it zooms them to 100% pixel resolution.
Bring All to Front If you have multiple applications running and some BoinxTV windows are hidden behind other apps, this brings all BoinxTV windows to the front.
(List of windows) At the bottom of the Windows menu there is a list of all windows associated with BoinxTV. You can select one to become the front-most window.

Menu Item Shortcut Description
BoinxTV Help ⌥⌘? Opens the BoinxTV online documentation in a web browser.
Watch Getting Started In case you missed the “Getting Started” movie at the beginning of BoinxTV you can watch it again.
Creating Custom Layers This brings you to a special section of the BoinxTV online documentation which describes how to create your own custom layers.
Read Me… Shows the Read-Me information.
Version History… Here you will find notes about the changes in each release.
